The objective of Artelier vzw is to develop initiatives to promote for a large public contemporary crafts from Belgium as well as its qualitiative workshops. For this reason a first Artelier Guide was published in 2004, in 2009 a second edition has been realised together with the new Artelier Website.
A QUEST FOR BEAUTY, INNOVATION AND AUTHENTICITY
This is also what we aimed for in 2004. Considering the positive reactions from studios, the press, galleries, collectors and the public this quest has been successful. All of this asked for more and after four years it seemed that the time has come for a new exploration of the world of contemporary crafts in Belgium.
Again we were attracted by studios that excel in (semi-) professionalism, craftsmanship, creativity, passion and authenticity. We were given inspiration and advice by different experts and organisations from various disciplines. The result is a unique choice of 400 studios from Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, classified into eight disciplines: glass, ceramics, letters, furniture, paper, jewellery, textiles and lighting.
Since 2004 particular tendencies have come forward. Some young studios have made a remarkable and daring entry especially in the glass and textiles scene. The interaction between “craft” and “design” is becoming more and more intense, lighting and furniture being the pioneers swiftly followed by textiles. The dividing line between the different disciplines is getting more and more diffuse. The creativity of certain studios is no longer limited to one discipline, cross-over experiments are on the rise. The information technology has also found its way to the world of the studios, their number of websites has doubled from one third in 2004 to two thirds today.
In this edition we opted for a maximum of space for the photographic material of the art objects from the studios, with their contact details added. Every discipline is reviewed by an expert from the field. In answer to some experts’ request, the “galleries, museums and shops” section has been further extended. Over 70 locations were included where objects of art are exhibited and/or sold.
Let this interesting exploration surprise you once more…
